asbestos used in construction of homes, schools and hospitals
Asbestos is a mineral which began being commercially used in the late 1800’s, although it actually dates back thousands of years.  Asbestos is very dangerous and exposure to it has been linked to cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.  These serious and possibly fatal illnesses can take from 10 to 40 years to appear after the victim has been exposed, meaning that the victim will have missed the opportunity to receive immediate and possibly life saving treatment.

Asbestos has been used in the construction of millions of homes, schools, hospitals, and various other buildings throughout the world, especially during the 1940’s through the 1970’s.  The government is aware of the dangers that Asbestos poses, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have restricted the use of the mineral and banned it for many purposes.  Unfortunately, many older buildings were constructed with Asbestos, and various older materials which are still being used containing Asbestos.  Listed below are some products which may contain Asbestos:

  • Stucco
  • Pipe insulation
  • Roofing and siding materials
  • Mufflers
  • Ceiling and floor tiles
  • Automobile brake lining
  • Plastics
  • Firefighters uniforms and other fire resistant materials
  • Drywall
